CRITICAL THREAT FOR WORDPRESS HOSTS

Is WordPress Vulnerable to PHP2Shell (CVE-2026-109618 & 109619)?

Yes. Over 40% of the web running WordPress is exposed to unauthenticated Remote Code Execution if the underlying PHP runtime is not secured.

Why Traditional WordPress Plugins (Wordfence / Sucuri) Cannot Block PHP2Shell

Security plugins like Wordfence or Sucuri run inside the WordPress PHP execution context (after wp-config.php is loaded).

Physical Execution Order:

  1. Web Server (Nginx / Apache) receives HTTP POST request.
  2. PHP SAPI & RFC1867 parser runs ➔ PHP2Shell triggers HERE, executing system() shellcode.
  3. WordPress initializes (index.php ➔ wp-load.php).
  4. Wordfence WAF evaluates the request (Never reached!).

Because PHP2Shell triggers in the core RFC1867 C-parser during request streaming, malicious payloads execute system() shellcode before index.php or Wordfence code ever initializes.

3-Step Emergency Fix for WordPress Site Administrators

Step 1: Disable session.upload_progress

WordPress does NOT use PHP native upload progress bars (WordPress uses its own AJAX media uploader). Disabling this will NOT break media uploads.

session.upload_progress.enabled = Off

Step 2: Check Your Server PHP Version
